January 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to 2021! We’re hopeful that this year will be a return to health and security for all of us, and we’re looking forward to everything we can get done!

This January has already been a busy one, with the national rollout of GLSEN’s No Name Calling Week, a week organized by K-12 educators and students to end name-calling and bullying in schools.

We hosted a Virtual GSA Meet-Up on January 15th to welcome students and teachers back to the virtual or in-person classroom. In case you missed it, check out some fun Zoom and phone backgrounds from our virtual GLSEN Phoenix Swag bag!

School Climate for LGBTQ students in Arizona

Findings from the newly released GLSEN 2019 National School Climate Survey demonstrate that Arizona schools were still not safe for most (LGBTQ secondary school students.

FACT: The vast majority of LGBTQ students in Arizona regularly (sometimes, often, or frequently) heard anti-LGBTQ remarks (Fig. 1). Many also regularly heard school staff make homophobic remarks (16%) and negative remarks about someone’s gender expression (37%).

FACT: Most LGBTQ students in Arizona experienced anti-LGBTQ victimization at school (Fig. 2). They also experienced victimization at school based on disability (40%), race/ethnicity (24%), and religion (22%). Most never reported the incident to school staff (60%). Only 28% of LGBTQ students who reported incidents said it resulted in effective staff intervention.

StoryBank profile clip: Dr. Cliff Moon

Dr. Cliff Moon, who coordinates diversity and inclusion initiatives for a Phoenix-area high school district, sat down with us a few months ago for a powerful interview about his childhood experiences, school experiences, and professional work as an educator and school administrator.

Listen to a short clip from Dr. Moon’s interview on the GLSEN Phoenix YouTube channel.

Dr. Moon shared his view that diversity issues in K-12 schools critically involve “a reciprocity of learning from one another,” such as when educators come together for professional development trainings intended to equip them with the skills and knowledge to better support their students. We at GLSEN Phoenix are especially grateful to work with Dr. Moon and the many other Phoenix educators who prioritize supporting LGBTQ students!
